    Various bootleg DVDs

There are several bootleg versions of the original Mermaid OVAs available, usually packaging both Mermaid Scar and Mermaid Forest in either a boxed or double-DVD set. Pictured at left are three of the ones I've found. From top, they are from the following Hong Kong companies:

    • Indian International Inc.: boxed set, DVD-00701-A (Forest) and DVD-00702-A (Scar). This set also comes with bootleg versions of the rare CD soundtracks to both anime; because of that, I recommend getting this set. I normally don't approve of bootlegs, but I'm inclined to look on these a little more favorably because there are no official DVD releases of the Mermaid OVAs.
    • Manga International Inc.: double-DVD set, DVD-298-E
    • Video Animation: boxed set, DVD-84901-E (Forest) and DVD-84902-E (Scar)
    • Boxed DVD set of the TV series. Unknown manufacturer.
There are also bootlegs of the TV series starting to come out, often in 3-DVD sets.

The main way you can tell a DVD is a bootleg is the inclusion of Chinese subtitles; all four of the sets mentioned above have them. Region 1 (North America) and Region 2 (Japan, Europe) DVDs, for the most part, do not include Chinese subtitles. Also note the companies' logos in the bottom left corner of the second two DVD sets.
